Targets

When preparing digital images or documents for conversion to microfilm, a key step is identifying records that will be on the microfilm. Editable targets are available for download: Microfilm Targets

This target sequence is adapted from ANSI/AIIM MS19-1993, Standard Recommended Practice -- Identification of Microforms. It is strongly recommended that these targets be used in order to adequately identify and authenticate the microform copy for legal purposes and to assist with quality control.

  1. START target
  2. RESOLUTION chart
    This is a standardized image that allows the inspector to measure density, resolution, and reduction. Technical targets must be filmed at least once on each roll or fiche, usually at the beginning. The filming sequence charts below show the position for filming these targets.
  3. CAMERA NO., ROLL NO., REDUCTION RATIO, RECORD SERIES NO.
  4. Work order
  5. Classification
  6. Agency certification
  7. Operator certification
  8. Documents to be filmed

    Contains enough information to allow a user to quickly see what information the document contains. Usually, it has the agency name, records series name, and the date span of the records being filmed.

Retakes or additions may be placed at the beginning or end of the reel, or they may be inserted into the portion of the film where the original frames should have appeared. Wherever they are placed, they must include:

  1. START target
  2. RESOLUTION chart
  3. RETAKE ORDER
  4. Three pages/frames before the documents to be (re)filmed
  5. The documents to be re(filmed)
  6. Three pages/frames after
  7. AGENCY CERTIFICATION
  8. END OF RETAKES target  PLEASE REWIND
