Telegram from Frank J. Cannon, GOP Organizer
Congratulatory telegram from Frank J. Cannon to Heber M. Wells. In 1891 Cannon
became active in organizing the Republican Party in Utah and one year later was
nominated as the Republican candidate for the territorial delegate to Congress.
Unsuccessful in 1892, he won the seat in 1894 and in 1897 was elected to the United
States Senate. In 1904 Cannon became editor of the Salt Lake Tribune and,
as an apostate Mormon, conducted a campaign of vilification against Reed Smoot,
Joseph F. Smith, and the Mormon Church (Utah State Archives and Records Service).
