Marriage Records
Marriage records most often consist of applications and licenses. Applications are considered private and are available only to the subject of the record for up to 100 years (UCA 63G-2-202). Licenses, the civil record providing recognition of a marriage, are generally public, but have very limited availability with the Utah State Archives.
For the records we do have listed below, most series are not indexed by name so researchers must provide a date or visit the Research Center in person. We do have available a commercially-produced CD-ROM indexing marriages in Salt Lake, Davis and Weber counties to aid in this search. The Western State Marriages Index maintained by BYU-Idaho Special Collections indexes marriages from all counties in Utah for various date spans, including most before 1900. Though not a complete index, searching is free and easy online and is certainly a worthy starting point to narrow down or confirm a possible marriage record location. Also see the list of counties by state that includes a link to available microfilm of the original records available through the LDS Family History Library system.
Whether using such indexes or not, it is recommended that patrons contact the clerk's office of the county where the marriage took place to inquire about obtaining copies of records. The Research Center provides a list of county office contact information online.
