Summary of Records

The cards contain basic military data for veterans of Utah service units involved in the Spanish American War.

Scope and Content

This card file was created by the now-defunct Military Records Section. The cards contain basic military data for veterans of Utah service units involved in the Spanish American War. The following types of data are included on each form in part or en masse: veteran's name, rank, organization, dates and places of enlistment and discharge, age, place of birth, residence, occupation, and next of kin with address and relationship. The bulk of the information for the cards was provided by the United Spanish War Veterans organization.
The Military Records Section was organized in 1957 within the State Historical Society's Division of State Archives. It was mandated to keep a record of all veterans of the United States Armed Forces who were buried in Utah and aid in placing a headstone at the head of any veterans' unmarked graves. The section also was given the charge to collect and preserve all other military records pertaining to the state of Utah available for acquisition from private individuals, veterans groups, and assorted state and federal governmental agencies. By 1965, the section was subsumed by the larger archives.
