Summary of Records

This series contains a book instigated by and published under the auspices of the State Council of Defense (although that agency had been dissolved in 1919). The book was intended as an account of Utah's involvement in the war and as a "Memorial Book" to honor those who participated in the war effort, served in the military, and died in service. The full title of the book is , The book covers a variety of subjects, including background on causes of the war and events leading up to American entry into the war, involvement of Utahns in military action, the activities and persons involved with the Council of Defense and other homefront activities, the roles played by women in the war, and information about war fatalities. In addition the book contains a comprehensive list of those who served in the military, divided by branch of service, enlisted and inducted, and wounded and non-wounded. The lists include such information as the names of the individuals, hometowns, dates of service, and whether or not they served overseas.

The book was published with at print run of 1000 copies, with a space on the title page to number each one and to list the person or entity to whom the book was "issued." The Archives holds copy number 659, which was issued to the Utah National Guard Adjutant General's Office. That was re-bound at some point and is the copy that was microfilmed by the Archives. The Archives also holds copy number 155, which the Archives purchased from a private seller. This second copy doesn't indicate to whom the book was issued, but retains its original binding.
