Summary of Records

This series contains the transcript of a non-classified technical briefing offered by the U.S. Air Force to the Utah State Advisory Council on Science and Technology. Topics raised during the transcribed meeting include the Cold War context that had created the need for the MX system, technical issues of both its building and operation, potential environmental and social impacts the system would place on a fragile desert ecosystem, and justifications for why the MX model had a higher probability for success than other potential weapon systems.

Scope and Content

This series contains the transcript of a non-classified technical briefing offered by the U.S. Air Force to the Utah State Advisory Council on Science and Technology. The meeting transcribed took place on March 13, 1980 with Air Force representative, Lieutenant Colonel Ken Van Dillen engaging in a question and answer session with members of the advisory council to discuss "the technical factors associated with the decision to pursue land-based mobile MX deployment" in the Great Basin region of Utah and Nevada. Topics raised during the meeting include the Cold War context that had created the need for the MX system, technical issues of both its building and operation, potential environmental and social impacts the system would place on a fragile desert ecosystem, and justifications for why the MX model had a higher probability for success than other potential weapon systems. In addition to member of the advisory council (who are listed on a roster at the end of the transcript), membersof the Utah MX Coordination Office were also present.

Research Note

The technical report transcription found in this series originally appeared on two separate microfiche cards, which remain attached to the series holdings. The decision was made to print out a paper copy of the transcribed report from the microfiche for permanent storage in the physical holdings of the Utah State Archives.
