Summary of Records

These are thank you and congratulatory letters received and sent by Governor Bangerter's office.

Scope and Content

These are thank you letters and routine congratulatory letters received, and in some cases sent, by Governor Bangerter's office. Thank you letters helped cultivate and preserve good will between the Governor and his constituents. Unlike much of the other correspondence, these letters did not require a reply and so were often separated from the rest of the correspondence. The policy was common through 1989; thereafter few were separated from the regular correspondence series. Incoming letters were written by state agencies, business leaders, other political leaders, school children, and the general public.
Many of the incoming letters were written in appreciation for the time the Governor spent speaking to or meeting with a group. Numerous letters also express appreciation for the receipt of a message of condolence or congratulatory note from the Governor. There were also thank you letters for the support the Governor had given to a group's position, particularly regarding pendinglegislation or proposed budgets. At election time, there were numerous letters offering congratulations on Governor Bangerter's election. Outgoing thank you letters express appreciation for help during an election campaign, hospitality given during a trip, or gifts sent.
