Summary of Records

This series contains a group of technical reports that were attached to a Deployment Area Selection and Land Withdrawal/Acquisition Draft Environment Impact Statement issued to the U.S. Air Force in December 1980. These environmental technical reports compare anticipated environmental impacts in specific alternative siting areas. Resource needs for the construction phase of the project, and anticipated impacts on wildlife, vegetation, transportation networks, etc. are the focus of others. This subseries of the DEIS was the focus of detailed evaluation by the Utah MX Coordination Office staff.

Scope and Content

The MX Coordination Office was created in 1979 and tasked with the responsibilities of coordinating affairs, and assessing the potential impacts of the proposed federal MX missile system in the Great Basin region of Utah and Nevada. A crucial component of the agencies function involved the detailed analysis of technical and environmental reports detailing the potential ecological and social impacts of MX on the state of Utah.
In December, 1980 the chief subcontractor for the MX project (Henningson, Durham & Richardon of Santa Barbara, California) released a Deployment Area Selection and Land Withdrawal/Acquisition Draft Environment Impact Statement (DEIS) to the United States Air Force Ballistic Missile Office (based at Norton Air Force Base, California). The DEIS compares the alternatives for site selection and describes in greater detail than preliminary studies, possible environmental impacts of missile deployment in Utah/Nevada and Texas/New Mexico. Considered also in theselection process were the mitigation measures proposed to reduce deployment impacts on threatened resources in these areas.
This series contains a group of technical reports that were attached to the DEIS.
