Scope and Content

This series is made up of publications produced by divisions of the Utah Centennial Commission to increase involvement in assorted centennial events and programs. Included are the Arts Division, Beautification Division, and the Historical Division. Publications were produced for numerous audiences including local committee members, participants in planning conferences, schools, libraries, state and federal agencies, church groups, scholars interested in historical writings, and the public.
Foremost among the publications are two titles produced by the Arts Division: the "Source Book" and the "Dance Manual." The "Source Book" is described as a practical manual pointing out the purposes of the celebration and the means for accomplishing these purposes. It was originally distributed to all participants in the planning conference but was also distributed to schools and made available to individuals for their personal libraries. A supplement known as the "Dance Manual" was also produced togive an old-time flavor to centennial entertainment presented at local events.
The Beautification Division produced a number of manuals, bulletins, newsletters, and booklets to advance centennial activities. The "Working Manual," an 82-page compilation covering all phases of beautification, was prepared and distributed to local committee members. It was later re-printed in sections to provide ready access to topics of specific interest. The "Beautification Bulletin" was produced in 1946 and the "Beautification News Notes" newsletter was published during the concentrated spring clean-up drives in 1947. "New Towns for Old" is a 20-page booklet which explains the procedures for setting up planning commissions.
Two titles by the Historical Division were intended to increase the public's historical awareness of the events being commemorated during the centennial. "This Is the Place" is a brief (5,500 word), illustrated history of the trek of Brigham Young and the pioneers from WinterQuarters to the Salt Lake Valley. "Utah Writings and History" is a bibliography of books, pamphlets, and historical writings.

Research Note

According to the "General Report," ten issues of both the "Beautification Bulletin" and the "Beautification News Notes" newsletter were published. Only nine issues of the "Bulletin" and seven of the newsletter have been accounted for. The Action Program section on publicity from the "Working Manual" is not included.
