Summary of Records

The Division of Travel Development (previously the Utah Travel Council) photographed the Utah landscape in the 1950s and 1960s to assist in their goal of providing publicity for the state. The division wanted to have a library of still photographs available for their own use, and to assist any individual or agency in promoting recreation and tourism within the state. Photographs in this collection were taken throughout the state, and are primarily scenic views, including many designated tourist spots, recreation sites, and panoramic landscapes.

Scope and Content

The Division of Travel Development (previously the Utah Travel Council) photographed the Utah landscape in the 1950s and 1960s to assist in their goal of providing publicity for the state. The division wanted to have a library of still photographs available for their own use, and to assist any individual or agency in promoting recreation and tourism within the state. Photographs in this collection were taken throughout the state, and are primarily scenic views, including many designated tourist spots, recreation sites, and panoramic landscapes. The travel council also photographed recreational activities such as boating and skiing, as well as activities and events they sponsored. This collection includes black and white prints, negatives, and color slides.

The travel council divided Utah into travel regions for promotional purposes. These regions and the counties they include are:1. Bridgerland (Cache and Rich); 2. Canyonlands (San Juan and Grand); 3. Castle Country (Carbon and Emery); 4. Color Country (Kane, Washington, Beaver, Garfield, and Iron); 5. Dinosaurland (Daggett, Duchesne, and Unitah); 6. Golden Spike Empire (Box Elder, Weber, Davis and Morgan); 7. Mormon Country or Great Salt Lake Country (Tooele and Salt Lake); 8. Mountainland (Summit, Wasatch and Utah); 9. Panoramaland (Juab, Millard, Piute, Wayne, Sevier, and Sanpete). The collection is arranged alphabetically by travel region. Thereunder, photographic prints and negatives are arranged alphabetically by location or event, followed by slides, which are also arranged alphabetically.
