Summary of Records

This series contains the minutes, sworn statements, decisions, physician certificates, guardian oaths, and guardian bonds involving insanity cases heard by the Territorial Probate Court in Iron County. The cases include both decisions made by the court on an individual's sanity, as well as the settling of property for those found insane (and remanded to the State Hospital in Provo).

Scope and Content

This series contains minutes of proceedings in several insanity cases heard by the court. The hearings were held to determine if certain individuals were insane and if they should be committed to the Territorial Insane Asylum in Provo. The minutes record testimony of witnesses, the decisions of the court, physician certificates, guardian oaths, and guardian bonds. The cases include both decisions made by the court on an individual's sanity, as well as the management of property for those found insane.
Individual cases recorded in the book include those for David W. Patten, John Morton Chatterly, Thomas Howarth, William F. Jones, George Cripps, and Mary M. Jensen.
