Summary of Records

This series contains meeting minutes for a committee formed to promote the construction of a facility that would act both as a community center and a memorial to those who had served in the military during World War II. Discussion in meetings centered on such topics as the need for and function of the proposed center, publicity to build public support for the project, the passage of a bond election to help fund the building, and the encouragement of private donations.

Scope and Content

This series contains meeting minutes for a committee formed to promote the construction of a facility that would act both as a community center and a memorial to those who had served in the military during World War II. The committee apparently formed as an off-shoot of the Tooele County Recreation Commission and initially carried the name Tooele Recreation Committee. The committee soon changed its name to reflect its primary focus of constructing a memorial building. The group met in the Tooele City Hall and appears to have been tied more closely to Tooele City than to the Board of Education, as the Recreation Commission was.The Memorial Center Committee included representatives from Tooele City, the Board of Education, and the Recreation Commission, as well as various unions, fraternal organizations, women's groups, and churches.
Discussion in meetings centered on such topics as the need for and function of the proposed center, publicity to build public support for the project, the passage of a bond election to help fund the building, and the encouragement of private donations. While the last known surviving minutes date from April 1946, there is no indication in the minutes that would suggest that the committee did not continue to function after that date. These minutes were originally kept in a volume with minutes from the Tooele County Recreation Commission. The volume was undoubtedly kept by Fred W. Huling, who acted as the executive secretary for the commission and as secretary of the Memorial Center Committee. The minutes of both bodies end when Mr. Huling resigned and moved away from Tooele.
