Summary of Records

This series contains a scrap book apparently compiled by John R. Winder and containing newspaper clippings related to city government and business correspondence related to the Deseret Tanning and Manufacturing Association.

Scope and Content

This series contains a scrap book apparently compiled by John R. Winder and containing newspaper clippings in the first part of the book and various business correspondence in the second part.
The newspaper clippings cover various subjects from years 1871 to 1876, with an emphasis on articles related to city government. The subjects include ordinances covering liquor laws, a perjury case, political and election coverage, complaints about taxes not being public, polygamous marriages, ordinances relating to butchering and slaughter houses, the Jordan Dam, minutes for the city council of Omaha and a few opinion articles.
The business correspondence includes letters from 1877 related to the Deseret Tanning and Manufacturing Association. The letters are responses from various companies regarding tanning products and supplies with related product literature. Some of the letters are addressed to John R. Winder, who was on the board of directors and the secretary for the association, while others are addressed to the association itself.
This scrap book was presumably compiled by John R. Winder. In addition to his involvement with the Deseret Tanning and Manufacturing Association, he served as City Assessor and Collector for Salt Lake City from 1870 to 1884 and as a member of the Salt Lake City Council from 1872 to 1878, which would account for his interests in municipal issues of the day.
