Summary of Records

This register documents land conveyed from the Federal Government to the State of Utah as provided in Congressional Acts. An Act passed 16 July 1894, which authorized the people of Utah to form a constitution and state government, and be admitted into the Union, also granted to the State, 500,000 acres for building permanent reservoirs, 110,000 acres for the University of Utah, 200,000 acres for the establishment of an agricultural college, and 100,000 acres each for the establishment of an insane asylum, a deaf and dumb asylum, an institution for the blind, a hospital for disabled miners, a school of mines, a reform school and normal schools. (Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. XXVIII, chap. CLXXXVIII. Published by authority of Congress, Boston: Brown, Little and Company). The lands were to be sold and the money put into a permanent fund which would generate interest to support the proposed purposes. The lists in this register provide a legal description of selected land, indicate the date the land was selected (or lost) and document authorization from the Secretary of the Interior. Each list specifies the cause the land is to benefit. The lists bear authorization from the Commissioner of the General Land Office certifying that the selected lands have been examined and found to be agricultural, non-mineral lands and free of adverse claims.
