Summary of Records

These are speeches delivered by Governor Bangerter during (and slightly before) his terms of office.

Scope and Content

These are the speeches given by Governor Bangerter during (and slightly before) his terms of office. The Governor spoke at many public and private occasions such as retirements, civic functions, and religious groups, up to 230 times per year. The Governor spoke for many reasons including public relations and personal interest. Not all the speeches were given by the Governor, some were delivered by Lieutenant Governor Val Oveson, some by Mrs. Bangerter, and a few by his aides. Speeches made before the Legislature are included, as are speeches to legislative subcommittees and at press conferences.
These speeches were written by the Governor's staff and policy advisors. A list of speeches and their authors has been included at the end of the series, however, not all speeches have listed the author. When the rough draft has been included by the Governor's Office and is notably different from the final draft, both drafts have been retained.
Included in the speeches are occasionalbackground notes and information to the Governor on whom he is speaking to and what he is speaking about, as well as the approximate length of time he is to speak. On some speeches there are handwritten corrections or additions. A few of the speeches have suggestions by the organization that has invited the Governor to speak about topics or points of interest. Most of the speeches deal with political topics, however some groups expressly asked that the topic not be political.

Research Note

Speeches to the Utah Dental Association on Feb 7, 1991 and to the Petroleum Retailers Association on Sep 16, 1988 are listed on the chronological list prepared by the Governor's Office but have not been found.
Search first under the initial significant letter and then by a subject word, depending on the year. For instance, a speech to the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce would be under Chamber of Commerce for the first four years and under Salt Lake for the second four.
