2025 Year in Review
Division of Archives and Records Service

2025 was a big year at the Utah State Archives! In the spring, we welcomed the Government Records Office to our Division, expanding our team and our reach across the state. From opening more doors to Utah’s historical records to supporting agencies statewide, we’ve been busy preserving the stories and decisions that shape our state. Here’s a look back at some highlights from the past year.
- Processed over 343 cubic feet of historical records for enhanced public access.
- Added over 53,000 new images to the Digital Archives, bringing the overall total number of items available online for 24/7 access to 1.8 million records!
- Reformatted over 303,000 images of permanent records.
- Identified and transferred 3,136 gigabytes of digital information from government agencies for permanent preservation and access.
- Conducted 169 site visits to governmental agencies around the state to share and grow knowledge and skills around the management and preservation of records.
- Created 22 new finding aids and updated an additional 265 finding aids.Â
- Answered over 2,500 public reference requests through our Reference Room.
- Approved 180 new retention schedules and updated 1,346 others.
- Mediated 82 record disputes with the help of the Government Records Ombudsman.
- Certified 1,400 records officers across the state who manage and provide access to their agency’s records.
- Received over 6,900 boxes of inactive records from Utah’s governmental agencies for storage in our State Records Center, and facilitated the destruction of 4,700 boxes stored there.
- Granted $45,000 in grants through the Utah State Historical Records Advisory Board (USHRAB.)
- Heard 63 record appeals through the Government Records Office since July.
- Mentored 11 interns through our competitive, paid internship program.

As we step into 2026, we’re energized by what’s ahead. With our expanded team, every record we preserve and every question we answer brings Utah’s story to life for today and for generations to come. Here’s to another year of discovery, collaboration, and keeping history within reach!
