The Utah State Archives currently works with the following colleges and universities to accept interns:
- Salt Lake Community College
- Brigham Young University
- Brigham Young University - Idaho
- Utah Valley University
We are more than willing to work with students from other institutions. To do so, we will need the students to make the connection between the State Archives and their institution.
Interns are also assigned a mentor during their time here; this mentor might change depending on the internship requirements. Mentors provide students with discussions related to our field as well as an understanding of best practices, and an opportunity to implement the theoretical learning they are receiving in their field of study.
Current Internship Opportunities
Family History Internship
Family History interns split their time between making records accessible (indexing or processing) and assisting our reference archivists in the Research Center.
General History Internship
General History interns will work on a number of different projects throughout the semester. This internship provides the opportunity to work in each of the Archives’ Sections and learn about all the different types of work that archivists do.
Research Interns work with our Research Center Team to create research guides and other tools to assist patrons. Topics could include legislative research, thematic issues (such as Utah’s changing liquor laws over the years), MX records, records related to controversial or politically charged events or topics in Utah history, and many others (If you have a suggestion let us know).
Public History Internship
Public History interns assist the Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator with various exhibits and/or events held throughout the year. This may include exhibit research, exhibit panel or display creation and design, event planning (such as food, programs, creating name tags or invitations, etc.)
There is an opportunity for a 2-semester Internship (Summer/Fall), where a student would work with the Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator to plan and put on the annual Archives Month Celebration in October. This internship would include opportunities for learning the various administrative tasks needed for public programming.
