Biography/History Notes

The Utah State Hospital (USH) is a 24-hour inpatient psychiatric facility located on East Center Street in Provo, Utah. The hospital serves people who experience severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital provides active psychiatric treatment services for 384 patients. The USH serves all age groups and covers all geographic area of the state. The USH works with 10 mental health centers as part of their continuum of care. All adult and pediatric beds are allocated to the mental health centers based on population.?From its origin the purpose of the hospital was to treat the mentally ill and to return them to a normal level of functioning. Over the years, tremendous advances in psychiatric medicine have changed the role of the Hospital to one of very active (and successful) treatment and rehabilitation.?The Hospital is no longer the primary deliverer of mental health services in Utah; this role changed with the creation in l969, of community mental health centers. Now residents throughout Utah can receive mental health services in their own community. The Hospital has changed its role from the only mental health treatment facility into a supporting roll for the community mental health centers. Specialized programs are offered for children, adolescents, geriatrics, forensics and adult residents.

The Utah State Hospital operates under the direction of the Utah State Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health.?Since l986 the Hospital has received full accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, certifying the high quality of the Hospital's environment and treatment programs.
