District Court (Seventh District : San Juan County) Information and indictment book, 1889-1927.

The record book in this series contains both minutes of the Territorial Probate Court of San Juan County (1889-1896), as well as criminal information and indictments from the criminal division of the Seventh District Court of San Juan County (1902-1926).

The probate court minutes in this volume were created and maintained by the court clerk, who was required by statute to enter "all orders and decrees of the court or judge...at length in the record books of the court provided and kept for that purpose" (Compiled Laws of Utah, 1888, volume 2, part 11, chapter 12, section 4286, page 537).

Originated by the San Juan County Probate Court during the territorial period, entries in the minute books begin in December 1888. A typical probate or guardianship case spans multiple dates. Copies of court orders and decrees, discharges, petitions, and notices are typical. Most cases involve the estates of deceased persons

The criminal information and indictments that make up the remainder of thisrecord book (pages 25 to 116) begin April 28, 1902. Entries include the court, the parties in the case, a summary of the charges, the names of the witnesses testifying before the committing magistrate, and sometimes the plea. The majority of charges recorded in this record book are felonious in nature.
