Summary of Records

This series contains reports of the Castle Gate Relief Fund Committee, a committee appointed by Governor Mabey to oversee the distribution of subscribed money after the Castle Gate mine explosion in March 1924.

Scope and Content

This series contains reports of the Castle Gate Relief Fund Committee, a committee appointed by Governor Mabey to oversee the distribution of subscribed money after the Castle Gate mine explosion in March 1924. The reports begin in 1924 and end in 1936 when the fund was exhausted and the committee disbanded.
The introductory materials include the Preliminary Report to Governor Mabey which explains the need for emergency relief. The Report on the explosion describes the cause of the mine explosions. Governor Mabey's appeal to the public to donate to the fund is included with a list of contributors.
A group of widows submitted a petition to Governor Dern in 1925 regarding the method of disbursement and the use of the fund.
The annual and final reports to the governor describe the activities of the committee, the amount of money given to each widow, any change in the location or condition of the families, and the state of the funds.
There are also monthly reports on the disbursementof the fund per individual and audit reports of the accounts and records.
Annie Palmer, the hired social worker, submitted weekly reports concerning her visits with the widows and children who were beneficiaries of the fund. The reports begin in July 1925 and end April 1929.
