Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains justice dockets that document civil and criminal cases heard by justices of the peace in the Fairview Precinct of Sanpete County. The docket books consist of printed form pages that include spaces for the names of plaintiffs and defendants, the actions and dates of court proceedings, the names of attorneys, and associated court costs for justices, officers, witnesses, and jurors.
The justice docket in box 1 covers the period of time between 1897 and 1920. It contains an index organized by plaintiff and defendant surnames at the beginning of the book. Proceedings from various justices of the peace are recorded in this docket. Justices of the peace appearing in this docket book include Heber Olson, Christian Peterson, Sidney Sanderson, Daniel James, James W. Christianson, Bruce Cox, H.P. Hansen, and Aron Cheney. Civil and criminal cases are interspersed
in this docket book.
The justice docket in box 2 covers the period of time from 1913 and 1926. It contains an index organized by plaintiff and defendant surnames at the beginning of the book. Proceedings from various justices of the peace are recorded in this docket. Justices of the peace appearing in this docket book include Bruce Cox, Ira Cox, James. W. Christianson, Aron Cheney, Newell B. Cox, and Stanley Brady. This book is divided between criminal cases, which take up the first half of the book, and civil cases, which take up the latter half of the book.
The types of civil and criminal cases that appear in both docket books include theft, recovery of property, assault and battery, befouling the water of Cottonwood Creek, forgery, disturbing the peace, libel, fraud, defamation, public nuisance, disturbing the peace, unlawful water use, trespass, burglary, larceny, adultery, rape, and suicide.
Boxes 3 and 4 contain loose records and materials that were filed in both justice dockets. They include complaints, bonds, summons, correspondence, affidavits, and commitments.
