Summary of Records

This series contains four record books for the Mound Fort School District (4th District) in Weber County. The records include minutes from board of trustee meetings, tuition, taxation, and general financial records, and payment slips. It should be noted that the book (Tuition List) dating from 1887-1890 is not explicitly identified as a Mound Fort record. However, the names in the records can be traced to the Mound Fort area. Mound Fort was a community located within Ogden City limits. At the time of the creation of the these records, many school districts had been established in Weber County. Each school district had three trustees who were to, "employ teachers, make the rate of tuition, take charge of the building...provide furniture and appliances," etc. These responsibilities are shown and carried out within this set of records. The minutes and financial books record the amount of tuition paid, appropriations, school teacher salary, and the cost of materials needed for the school. Education was funded in Ogden through taxes and tuition and later received financial support from the territorial government. Mound Fort School District was dissolved when the school became part of Ogden School District in 1890. Sources used in compiling this information include: 1903-1904. Annual Report of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools: With Rules and Regulations of the Public Schools of the City of Ogden, Utah: Containing Also a Brief Historical Sketch, With Comparative Tables from the Time of the Organization of the Board 1890 To June 30, 1904.
