Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains ledgers documenting public utilities accounts. The city clerk maintained these ledgers to track customer payments for services provided, namely water and electricity. The ledgers contain such information as the name of the account holder, the amount the account holder owed, the method by which they paid, the date they paid, and the balances of accounts, including any debits or credits on the account leftover after payment. The ledgers also occasionally contain an account of the meter reading. Also included in this series is a ledger of utilities deposits. A record of deposits made by customers at the time of opening their utilities accounts was kept by the city in order to track payment owed back to the customer should they disconnect their service. This ledger notes the name of the customer, the amount of the deposit, and the date the deposit was submitted. If refunded, the city clerk crossed the name out and noted the date and amount of the refund. Though unrelated to the rest of the information in the book, one of the ledgers recording water payments also contains a record of cemetery plots bought in the city. This section is secondary to the rest of the ledger and includes such information as the date the lot was purchased, the name of the person purchasing the lot, and the location of the lot. Also included is the amount paid for the lot and the method of payment.
