Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains documents filed with the Secretary of State / Lieutenant Governor relating to the legal incorporation of cities and towns in the state. The records may include petitions for incorporation, articles of incorporation and amended articles of incorporation, annexation documentation, disconnection petitions, records of change of class, and maps showing municipal plats and boundaries. At the beginning of the series there is a working master list of towns and cities with information and notes about the status of each municipality. For some municipalities there are folders in the series, but no documents in the folders.
Research Note
There are no holdings for 2004-2006, possibly due to a change in total retention in the office at about the same time. This break in recordkeeping is also why there are two different sets of records that include the same cities and towns. The Lieutenant Governor's office switched to electronic records in 2011, bringing an end to paper records.
