Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains materials relating to Governor J. Bracken Lee's designation of particular days, weeks, months, or years to focus public attention on a variety of issues, ideals, events, individuals or causes. Many of the documents carry the label "Statement of the Governor", while a few documents are designated "Proclamations". Proclamations are more official in their wording and bear the state seal. Otherwise, the difference between a "statement" and a "proclamation" is unclear. The series also includes material relating to such designations, mostly correspondence from organizations requesting that the Governor to issue some type of proclamation. At some point in Lee's administration the governor's office adopted the policy of only designating special days, weeks, or months if a Utah group acted as a sponsor for the observance. This policy is reflected in the numerous requests from national organizations that the governor's office turned down for lack of a local sponsor. Specialdesignations made by Governor Lee are varied and include such things as the official announcement of election days, "Newspaper-Boy Day", "Rabbit Week in Utah", "Civil Defense Weeks", and "Know Your Utah Year". These files also include a number of statements of welcome or congratulations to particular organizations on the occasion of a conference or a milestone in the history of the organization.
Research Note
Arrangement of materials in this series is documented by the microfilm copy made in 1979. The microfilm presumably represents the order in which the records were received from the Governor's office and this physical arrangement has been maintained as much as possible. Because filing practice was not always consistent, researchers will want to approach their search broadly, scanning the entire container list, as well as consulting the inventories for other record series from Governor Lee's office.
