Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains the quarterly journal of the Utah State Hospital Professional staff called Provo Papers. The journal began in 1957 with the goal of distributing information and "scientific thought as it pertains to the State Hospital." The name was chosen both for alliteration and an intentional link to the Utah State Hospital, due to widespread interest in upgrading state hospitals at the time. The October 1976 issue focused on the history of the hospital and mental health treatment in Utah. Various issues were identified by the year and month or season in which they were published. Some were also assigned volume and issue numbers, but such designations were not consistent over time.
Gaps
The State Archives does not have a complete set if there were four issues for each year of this quarterly journal. Gaps may include issues from 1961-1969 and 1975-1977.

Custody History
The State Archives acquired a scattered number of issues of the Provo Papers over time from various sources. The State Hospital transferred a large number of issues to the Archives in 2026 making the Archives holdings more extensive, although not necessarily complete.

Processing Information
Records in this series were first processed by Gina Strack in 2026. Additional records received from the hospital were processed later that year by Alan Barnett.
