Scope and Content

This series contains a collection of records related to the naturalization of individuals in Grand County, dating as early as 1896 and as late as 1942. To become a citizen of the United States, an individual normally filed a "declaration of intention to become a citizen" at least two years prior to applying for citizenship. The next step was the naturalization hearing at which the candidate and witnesses either made oral statements or filed written petitions and affidavits attesting to the applicant's character, worthiness to become a citizen, and the validity of statements made to the court. If the judge found the applicant eligible to become a citizen, an oath was administered and the individual renounced his former citizenship. At this point a certificate of citizenship was issued documenting the fact.
This series includes a naturalization record book (1908-1929) containing pre-printed petitions for naturalization, along with affidavits of witnesses, oaths of allegiance, and orders admitting the petitioner. The series includes a certificate of citizenship book (1896-1913) which contains the court copy of certificate issued to five individuals in that time period. Along with the books the series also contains a few miscellaneous loose documents, including declarations of intention and correspondence relating to an individual naturalization or to administrative matters.
