Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series consists of newsletters usually meant for employees of the Utah State Hospital. The specific title and purpose changed over time, but typically provided a way to communicate news about and from the State Hospital.
The Indicator: Bulletin at the Utah State Hospital was a monthly publication that started in 1943. Issues are bound for an entire year except for the last issues held around 1960. As explained in the first issue's message from the Superintendent, the name "refers to one who points out of identifies the quality or status of a given subject." Features include employee recognition, relevant news from around the world (but especially in the field of mental health), and interesting facts ("Did You Know").
So U'll No started in about 1974 (issues are not numbered) and also combined news about the hospital, for and about employees ("Here + There"), other general items of interest ("Browsing"), and staff updates ("Comings and Goings"). Several issues feature cartoons and other hand-drawn illustrations.
30 Day Review started in Jun 1994 for "employees and friends of Utah State Hospital." Monthly issues were about four pages with a more professional layout of multiple columns, graphics, and color. Articles included hospital news, events, program and employee recognition, and a superintendent's message. The Volume 1 Number 1 issue speaks of a "new look" for a newsletter of the same name, so there may be previous issues as well.
The Utah State Hospital Newsletter picked up where the 30 Day Review left off at the end of 1999. It is a newsletter written for employees. Information is collected regarding hospital issues such as programs in which employees participate, facilities information, historical information, recognition of employees, announcements, and other information for the benefit of staff. The format and layout varies over the years but is generally between four and six pages in length, printed in full color, with plentiful photographs. The first item on the front page is often known as Superintendent's Corner. Issue numbering is sequential.
Gaps
Several gaps are apparent in the earlier newsletters. There are no issues between the first issue in 2000 and 2007, or later than 2018 (number 53). The Utah State Hospital may have more complete sets of these publications.Ă‚Â
