Summary of Records

This series contains historic photographs of Bingham Canyon, Bingham city, the Bingham Mine, and nearby Copperton. The photographs in this series document the settlement and buildings of workers and families who lived in Bingham Canyon (and nearby Copperton), prior to Bingham city being abandoned and swallowed up by ongoing open-pit copper mining in the canyon.

Scope and Content

This series contains historic photographs of Bingham Canyon, the Bingham copper mine, and the nearby city of Copperton. The photographs in this series document the settlement and buildings of workers and families who lived in Bingham Canyon (and nearby Copperton), prior to Bingham Canyon being abandoned and completely swallowed up by ongoing open-pit copper mining in the canyon. The bulk of the photographs in this series are dated and were taken by Utah Copper Mine (U.C.M.), a mining company that once held stake in mining operations at Bingham before it was consolidated with numerous other entities over time. The company photographer was located in the engineering office at the Arthur Mill, which was closed in 1984 and subsequently demolished in 1991. The position of company photographer was abolished at that time, and all subsequent photography of the mine and mining operations was contracted to private commercial photographers. Box 1 contains portraits, small photographs, and post cards of Bingham Canyon, the mine, and Copperton. Box 2 contains larger panoramic photographs of both Bingham Canyon and Copperton.
