Summary of Records

This series contains records relating to the project. The records exist in a variety of formats, documenting the process of the project, as well as the booklet "Hecho en Utah: A Cultural History of Utah's Spanish-Speaking Communities, which was the ultimate product of the project.

Scope and Content

The goal of this project was to research, document and present the traditions of Utah's Spanish-speaking residents who come from nearly every country in Latin America, and from parts of the United States where Spanish is spoken as a native language. Extensive fieldwork uncovered a wealth of performing traditions, arts and crafts. Project components included a lecture series sponsored in part by the Utah Humanities Council, a folk art exhibit that opened at the Chase Home Museum in 1992, a series of twelve concerts spotlighting different music and dance traditions, and production of three 90-minute cassette tapes which were later re-mastered into three compact discs with support from Utah State Library System. The project also culminated with publication of a bi-lingual booklet entitled "Hecho en Utah: A Cultural History of Utah's Spanish-Speaking Communities. This project was funded in part by grants from the Utah Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. This series includes documents related to the Hecho en Utah project, including marketing, correspondence, receipts, lyrics, notes, and media recorded on CDs, cassettes, and tapes.
Materials in this series were assigned a project number by the Folk Arts Program, consisting of a three-letter code, creation year, a letter indicating format, and the numerical order of the materials.
