Summary of Records

This series contains records relating to the Sheepherding survey. The reecords exist in a variety of formats, documenting the fieldwork that went into the survey, as well as a copy of the book which was produced by the survey.

Scope and Content

Sheepherding has long been an important economic activity in Utah. This survey of Utah's sheep herding industry focused on the folklife of the shepherds. Interviews were with English-speaking and Spanish-speaking shepherds in both high mountain and lowland desert locations. The sheep wagons or sheep camps they live in, sheep camp furnishings and their handicrafts were documented. Laurie Rich was the primary fieldworker. The survey is referred to as SHE in Folk Art's assigned project numbers. This series contains records of the fieldwork, including notes, photographs, and recordings. Also includes is a copy of Laurie Rich's book, "Herding Sheep in Northern Utah".
