Summary of Records

This series contains files relating to the Folk Artists in the Schools project. The records exist in a variety of formats, documenting the process and results of the project.

Scope and Content

Fieldwork was conducted in several neighborhoods and communities to identify folk artists in order to share their traditions in the classroom. Folklorists contextualized their findings in assemblies and classroom presentations. In 1979 and 1980 the communities were Ogden (Barbara Rahm), Tooele (Carol Edison) and in the neighborhoods of Glendale and Murray in Salt Lake County (Hal Cannon and Mark Cantor). British concertina artist, Alistair Anderson, presented a concert in a Salt Lake Grade School. In 1989, Elaine Thatcher spent two weeks in the Vernal area of the Uintah Basin. In 1990 Dave Stanley presented local folk artist Valentine Vainshteyn at a school in Salt Lake's Avenues district. This series contains files related to this project, such as field notes, photo slides, and recordings of interviews related to the project.
