Summary of Records

This series contains records relating to the Grouse Creek cultural survey. The records exist in a variety of formats, documenting the process and results of the survey.

Scope and Content

In July, 1985 a team of folklorists, architectural historians, and historians tested the idea of combining, as part of the same fieldwork project, a concern for architecture, folk arts, and folklife while studying the ranching community of Grouse Creek, Utah. The work was motivated by a growing commitment among public-sector historians and folklorists to a more comprehensive approach to preservation that includes both tangible and intangible cultural resources and embraces both the historical past and the cultural present. The study was summarized in a publication that examined the project, reviewed its background and genesis, described its planning and execution, reported its findings and judged what may be learned from it. This was a joint project of the American Folklife Center, the Utah State Historic Preservation Office, Folk Arts Program of the Utah Arts Council, the Western Folklife Center, the National Park Service, and Utah State University. Complete archival materials of this collection are housed in the Austin and Alta Fife Folklore Archives at the Utah State University. This series contains records related to this project, including photo slides, administrative documents, travel logs and notes, and a copy of the final publication of the Grouse Creek Cultural Survey book.
