Schedule Description

In-house publication put out by the patients at the State Hospital.

Scope and Content

This series contains copies of the patient newsletter first published February 1955 under the name "The Lode Star". The newsletter was compiled and published by patients "to bring better understanding to the patients as to the Hospital functions, to put the patients problems before the staff and to enlighten the patients of staff problems along with informing the public of the hospital program." The newsletter contains a wide variety of information, including calendars of events, reports from each ward, editorials, humorous anecdotes, poems, inspirational sayings, and patient artwork. Although it was the intention that the newsletter be published every month, some months were missed and there is no comprehensive list of which months it was published. The collection at the State Archives is probably incomplete, but there is no way to know exactly what issues might be missing. The Lode Star was last published in 1979.
