Office of Tourism

These records document the agency's history and efforts to promote tourism in the state. They may include scrapbooks, photographs, articles, program notes, and information about agency development, as well as events and programs sponsored or funded by the agency.

This series includes documents related to the history of Council Hall, which was acquired by the State of Utah in 1961. Dedicated in January 1866, the structure served for nearly 30 years as the seat of government in Salt Lake City and the meeting place for the Territorial Legislature. It is considered Utah's Second Capitol. The building later served as police quarters and police court and housed the Board of Health and Sanitary Division offices, storage of fire department equipment, and other city purposes. Plans were made to restore the Council Hall. In 1961, the building was completely dismantled and reconstructed on Capitol Hill. It was formally presented to the State of Utah in July 1963 and serves as an official State information center and home of the Office of Tourism.

Documents include Portfolio of Photographs and Descriptive Notes of Salt Lake City Pioneer City Hall, correspondence (Utah State Building Board, Mutual Improvement Associations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Utah Tourist and Publicity Council, Utah Governor, Utah Secretary of State, Utah Department of Development Services, Salt Lake City Corporation, Pro Utah, invitation used to invite 100 selected guests to Open House on January 4, 1963), Council Hall brochures, historical narratives, compilation of pertinent facts, newspaper and magazine clippings (Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune, Intermountain Contractor), notes re furnishings and art, architect's restoration notes, National Registry of Historic Places Inventory--Nomination Form, fiscal records (insurance policy endorsement for adding oil paintings, expense vouchers), legal records (contract for cleaning and repair, court order of immediate occupancy), and the Council Hall historical diorama proof (2008), etc.
