Where to Find Other Records

The Utah State Archives manages and collects records created by Utah governmental entities. This means that we do not hold books and materials created by people, families, businesses, or governments outside of Utah. The following lists will help you connect with some of the most common referral locations.

Utah State Library Division - Provides funding, training, professional expertise, and technical advice to library directors, library staff, and trustees across Utah.

Utah Archives and Special Collections

Utah Historical Society - Encourages the research, study, and publication of Utah history. Publishes the Utah Historical Quarterly and provides reference services for its Library and Collections.

Utah State Historic Preservation Office - Works to preserve Utah's past in archaeology and historic preservation. Manages Utah Cemeteries and burials database.

FamilySearch Library - Books, films, images, and documents collection in Salt Lake City in conjunction with familysearch.org and FamilySearch Centers worldwide.

Church History Library - Collects and preserves materials by or about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members.

Salt Lake County Archives - Manages and provides access to records created by county offices, with selected online. Research hours by appointment only.

University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library and Special Collections - Rare books and materials about Utah and Intermountain West, among other topics of global interest.

Utah State University Merrill-Cazier Library Special Collections and Archives - Rare books, manuscripts, photographs, and government information (especially for Cache County). Hosts Fife Folklore Archives.

Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library L. Tom Perry Special Collections - Materials from a range of collecting areas, featuring Mormon and Western history and Utah County local history.

Weber State University Stewart Library Special Collections - Materials that document Ogden and Weber and Davis Counties specifically and Northern Utah generally.

Southern Utah University Gerald R. Sherratt Library Barbara A. Matheson Special Collections - Materials that document Cedar City and Southern Utah, featuring Michael O. Leavitt Collection.

International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers - Lineage society for women descended from Mormon pioneers to Utah, with a museum and collections of artifacts, written histories, and photographs of settlers before 1869.

National Society of Sons of Utah Pioneers - Lineage society for men descended from Mormon pioneers to Utah, with a library and quarterly magazine.

Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City Office of Records and Archives - Manages and preserves records from the diocese and about the Roman Catholic Church in the state of Utah.

County Offices and Courthouses

Most records of interest will be in the County Clerk's or County Recorder's offices. Utah.gov maintains a list of local government websites to find current contact information.
