About the Records

As an independent agency, the Utah Public Service Commission regulates energy supply, water, telecommunications, and railroads. Its records document that function since 1917. Records at the Utah State Archives include historical case files and dockets.

Public Service Commission

The history of the Public Service Commission began in 1917 with its creation for the purpose of regulating utilities and their services. It has been a part of the Department of Business Regulation and the Department of Commerce but was made an independent agency in 1983. As a key regulatory agency in Utah, its records are a rich resource of its primary function regarding utilities and the history of growth and development in the last century.

Dockets and Case Files

Case files (Series 642) document the formal proceedings of the Utah Public Service Commission as it carried out its legislative mandate to supervise and regulate all public utilities within the state. The case files represent pleadings before the commission in the form of complaints, applications, or petitions that require a formal hearing.

Dockets (Series 24312) are related in function, containing more recent orders and notices by the Commission, and are generally available on their website electronically.

We have a list of cases indexed by utility name and date available. For additional assistance, please contact us at [email protected].
