Summary of Records

This series contains official student registers from the Timpanogos School located at 400 North and 500 West in Provo, Utah. All the registers are in a standardized booklet format, presumably published by the Territorial and later the State Office of Public Instruction. The earliest registers date from the 1892-1893 school year, which is the year the school opened. The registers typically record such information as student names, ages, parent names, place of residence, daily attendance, and some scholastic evaluations. The earlier registers also note whether students can read and write and whether their parents are Mormon or not. The registers are generally arranged by school year, grade, and teacher. Some registers also include lists of visitors, school-year schedules, and various class and school statistics, and even teacher salaries.

Scope and Content

This series contains official student registers from the Timpanogos School. All the registers are in a standardized booklet format, printed for the Territorial and later the State Office of Public Instruction. The earliest registers date from the 1892-1893 school year, which is the year the school opened. In the earlier years the school taught students up through the 8th grade, but later the 7th and 8th grades were moved out of the school and the school housed grades 1-6.
The registers typically record such information as student names, ages, parent names, place of residence, daily attendance, and some scholastic evaluations. The earlier registers also note whether students can read and write and whether their parents are Mormon or not. The registers are generally arranged by school year, grade, and teacher. Some registers also include lists of visitors, school-year schedules, various class and school statistics, and even teacher salaries.
A number of incidental items can be found slipped inside registers in this series. These items include such things as student absence excuse forms, teacher daily schedule notes, student assignments, student evaluation slips, statistical calculation notes, and sheet music. There is also evidence that some years after their original use, some of the registers were used for pressing plant specimens, presumably as part of the science instruction at the school.
All the records in this series date from the time period when the Timpanogos School was housed in its original building located on the northwest corner of 5th West and 4th North, prior to the construction of a new school building just to the north in 1938.

Research Note

It is clear that many register books are missing from this series. The most notable gaps include entire years from 1893-1902, 1904-1906, 1917-1918, 1919-1920 and 1931-1932. In addition, there are numerous classes missing from the remaining years. It is not clear how many classes were taught each year, so it is not known exactly how many registers are missing from the sequence.

Arrangement

Chronological by school year, thereunder numerical by grade.
