Scope and Content
This series contains over 30,000 color slide transparencies, mostly in 35 mm format, but also in smaller formats. Many of the slides were taken by Preservation Office staff for the purpose of documenting historic buildings and sites, documenting projects in which the office was involved, and creating a reference collection of visual materials for presentations and training conducted by staff members. Some of the slides were taken by contractors who conducted architectural surveys of entire towns or neighborhoods. Some slides were apparently collected from other sources, since they predate the formation of the Preservation Office. Most of the slides date from the 1970s and early 1980s, but there are some from the 1960s and some undated slides that could have been created after 1985. The bulk of the images are of historic buildings, but the collection also includes views of other structures, historic sites, landscapes, monuments, grave markers, and archaeological sites.

Custody History
The Preservation Office turned the slides in this series over to the Utah State Historical Society to be cataloged as a research collection. The records were processed by Sharlyn Jackson in 2000 and assigned the collection designation MSS C 605. In reevaluating the collection, the Division of State History recognized that the collection was made up of government records and transferred them to the State Archives in November 2021.
