Summary of Records

These registers list various companies to whom the Territorial Secretary or Secretary of State had issued certificates of incorporation. They were created to help access other series of record books, incorporation case files, etc.

Scope and Content

These registers list various companies to whom the Territorial Secretary or Secretary of State had issued certificates of incorporation. They were created to help access other series of record books, incorporation case files, etc. The registers include building and loan associations, insurance firms, religious associations, and a wide range of other private businesses. At times, a later index will repeat at least part of the information in earlier registers. The last two volumes are the most comprehensive and should be consulted first when searching for information on a particular company; companies missed in those volumes might be mentioned in an earlier index.
The earliest book contains four sections. The first is a chronological listing of firms, arranged by their filing date. The list provides business name, where incorporated, number of shares, value of shares, place of business, filing dates, and remarks. The list was begun in 1880, but only continued into 1883.
After theinitial listing, two sections with alphabetical tabs provide alphabetized listings of private businesses and building and loan associations, excluding insurance companies. These sections give the name of the company, filing date, and the record book in which a copy of the certificate of incorporation was entered. When the pages allotted for a tabbed letter were filled in the second section, entries were continued into the appropriately lettered spot in the third section. These sections cover the period from 1880 to 1896. For those entered by early 1883, locating the date in the first section will provide additional information on the company's stock, place of business, etc. The fourth section also has alphabetical tabs and is similar to the second and third sections, but provides alphabetized listings only for insurance companies (both fire and life). The name and filing date are given. Again, for those entered by early 1883, more information on the company can be located in the firstchronological listing.
Volume 0 has columns for the entry of number, name, amount capital stock, date filed, record book number and page, principle place of business, and remarks. The remaining volumes have basically the same categories, but filing case number and docket number replace "number" and, by volume 3, the "principle place of business" and "remarks" headings have been replaced by the more specific "where incorporated" and "instrument filed" headings, respectively.
Volume 1 includes at least some, but not all, of the information also recorded in the territorial volume and volume 0. Volume 3 includes at least some of the information recorded in all the preceding volumes. The same is true of the last two unnumbered volumes which repeat alphabetized listings from earlier volumes as well as new entries.

Arrangement

Chronological.

Volumes are arranged chronologically. In the first volume, the initial listing is chronological by certificate of incorporation filing date. Other lists are alphabetized by the first letter of the company name, thereunder chronologically. Volume 0 is arranged alphabetically by first letter, thereunder chronological by filing date. The remaining volumes are alphabetical by the first two letters, thereunder chronological.
