Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains a record of regular and special meetings of the city council and the city commission. The minutes are taken by the city recorder and document topics discussed and decisions made in the meetings. Provo City originally had a city council made up of a mayor, four aldermen, and nine councilors . Aldermen were later dropped from the council and in January 1912 the council was replaced by a board of commissioners, made up of the mayor and two commissioners. The city functioned under a city commission until January 1982, when the city switched to a municipal council of seven members. Each of these groups served as the governing body of the city and the minutes of their meetings have been maintained as one continuous record. The minutes typically note the date and time of each meeting, the meeting place, members present, business discussed, decisions made, and votes taken.
Gaps
When records in this series dating from 1851-2018 came to the State Archives, minutes from September 1853 to January 1861 and from May to December 1935 were missing. Those minutes were apparently lost by 1962, because they do not appear on microfilm created that year.
