Summary of Records

The Utah State Historical Society collected and compiled information on Utahns serving in the World Wars. These records consist primarily of lists of Utah men and women killed, wounded, missing, and discharged with overseas service.

Scope and Content

The Utah State Historical Society collected and compiled information on Utahns serving in the World Wars. These records consist primarily of lists of Utah men and women killed, wounded, missing, and discharged with overseas service. Assorted correspondence, newspaper clippings, veteran ceremony programs, service questionnaires, and tributes to the dead also are included. The majority of the material pertains to World War II.
The scope of information pertaining to World War I is limited to veteran service questionnaires, veteran service records, newspaper clippings, correspondence with the Utah State Historical Society, veteran award ceremony information and a single microfiche with a handwritten list of World War I Veterans. These records span from 1915-1922, along with two copies of a tribute to all Utah men who served from the Ogden area called "Lest We Forget," written in 1927. The World War I records contain a report from the Council of Defense of the State of Utah, a book of information describing councils and programs created by Governor Bamberger and Chairman Farnsworth in 1917. These councils allowed for Utah to be one of the states with the largest contributions towards the war, both at home and overseas. The Council of Defense of the State of Utah was dissolved in 1918.
The records related to World War II mainly consist of extensive rosters of service men and women who were discharged, killed during or after the war, wounded, missing, enlisted or received medals in various military branches from Utah, including Navy, Army, Marines, National Guard, WACs, SPARS, WAVES and nurses, with minimal personal information in regards to women. The records contain correspondence between the Utah State Historical Society and families, along with World War II veteran information requests from the Utah State Historical Society mailed to the homes of the veteran's families. These records span from 1940-1960, with many lists of servicemen without any compiling date, as well as newspaper clippings within that time frame. These records provide information through 1960 for men who were killed and served in both World War II and the Korean War.
This series was compiled during and after the World Wars, and maintained by the Utah State Historical Society.
