Summary of Records

The cards contain basic military data for Utah veterans of the Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection.

Scope and Content

This card file was created by the now-defunct Military Records Section. The cards contain basic military data for Utah veterans of the Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection. The following types of data are included on each card in part or en masse: veteran's name, service unit, and dates of enlistment and discharge. The bulk of the information for the cards was provided by the United Spanish War Veterans organization, whose membership included participants in both conflicts.
The Military Records Section was organized in 1957 within the State Historical Society's Division of State Archives. It was mandated to keep a record of all veterans of the United States Armed Forces who were buried in Utah and aid in placing a headstone at the head of any veterans' unmarked graves. The section also was given the charge to collect and preserve all other military records pertaining to the state of Utah available for acquisition from private individuals, veterans groups, and assorted state and federal governmental agencies. By 1965, the section was subsumed by the larger archives.
The Spanish American War began on April 25, 1898 when the United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. However, the treaty brought only a brief pause in military operations for the Army in the Philippines. Leaders of the native nationalist movement were no more ready to accept American rule peacefully than Spanish. The Philippine Insurrection resulted--spanning from February 1899 to July 1902.
