Provo (Utah). Municipal Council Ordinances and resolutions, 1861-1949.

This series contains books used to record ordinances and resolutions adopted by the city council or commission. Ordinances are municipal laws regulating a variety of activities within the city, including the roles of city officials, taxation, zoning, business licensing, traffic control, protection of water sources, and the sale of alcohol. Resolutions are typically statements of opinion or policy. The council may pass a resolution to commemorate an event, to endorse or direct a particular action, or to approve a contract or agreement. During the period when this series was created, the city maintained ordinances and resolutions together. Ordinances and resolutions typically include a title, an assigned number, the text of the ordinance or resolution, the date it was adopted, the signature of the mayor, and the city seal. Portions of the first two books in the series were used at other times for other city purposes, but the most important function of the books was to document ordinances and resolutions. The first book contains financial accounts for the Mayor's Court in the 1850s, while the second book includes some financial reports.
