Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains a register of deaths reported to the county clerk. Each entry in the register typically has an assigned number, name of decedent, age, sex, race, color, term of residence, birthplace, marital status, occupation, last place of residence, causes of death, date of death, and the name of the party making the report.
Beginning in 1898, each physician, clergyman, justice of the peace, and undertaker was required to keep a registry of the name, age, residence, and time of death of the decedent. Each person registering deaths filed quarterly with the county clerk or the local board of health in the case of incorporated cities. (Revised Statutes of Utah 1898, Title 57, p. 474-475)
In spite of the law, many deaths were not reported to the county clerk, so the record is incomplete. The gaps in the record are most notable in the case of the Scofield mine disaster, which occurred on 1 May 1900 and resulted in the death of about 200 miners. None of those deaths are recorded in this register.
In 1905, the state passed a law requiring each county to file a uniform certificate with the State Bureau of Vital Statistics and the system of filing death certificates replaced the system of recording documented in this series.
Research Note
This series contains three different copies of the Register of Births. There are two different microfilm copies with dates noted in the container list. One has a reel number and may be accessed on microfilm, the other is a preservation copy only. When borrowing the original volume for microfilming, the Utah State Archives also created color digital images which are now available online.
Arrangement
Generally chronological by reporting date and roughly chronological by death date.
