Summary of Records

This series is composed of abstracts and briefs filed by attorneys arguing cases before the Supreme Court. Abstracts are summaries or excerpts from the records of the court which originally heard a case which has been subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court. Briefs are written arguments of the attorneys and include references to the legal authorities, such as previous court decisions, statutes, etc., on which the attorney is basing his argument.

Scope and Content

Abstracts and briefs appeared to go through a three-stage process. The attorney would first prepare an abstract or brief, have it typed, and then file it. The documents might, alternatively or subsequently, be typeset and printed in a pamphlet form. Following printing, the documents may be bound together in volumes containing several cases.

There is no apparent explanation for some records being left in the typed form and some progressing to printing or ultimate binding. Abstracts and briefs from a single case may be found in typescript,unbound printed, and book-bound forms.

This series contains those documents which were printed and bound. Documents which were typeset and printed in a pamphlet form, yet not bound in the volumes of abstracts and briefs were usually filed with the typewritten documents. Some are, however, included here.

Research Note

Cases 6190 - 14949 (ca. dates 1941-1975) missing from collection, except for some sporadic holdings for cases 11688-14945.

Arrangement

Numerical by Supreme Court case number.

Storage and preservation needs first required division by format, and the container list reflects these divisions noting large bound volumes, individual pamphlets, and finally fiche.
