Summary of Records

This series contains a variety of materials related to Governor Lee's public addresses. Included in these materials are the text of public speeches, messages to the Legislature, radio addresses, news media interviews, campaign speeches, press releases, as well as correspondence related to these public messages. In addition to such documents the series includes considerable correspondence, mostly received in response to Lee's speeches. A portion of the series consists of subject files ostensibly meant as source material for speeches, but encompassing a wide variety of topics.

Scope and Content

This series contains a variety of materials related to Governor Lee's public addresses. These materials include the text of public speeches, messages to the Legislature, radio addresses, news media interviews, campaign speeches, and press releases, as well as correspondence related to these public messages. In addition to such documents the series includes considerable correspondence, mostly received in response to Lee's speeches. Most letters are very favorable and constitute a type of "fan-mail", but the files include some disapproving letters also. Correspondence in response to the Governor's public statements is filed under the heading "Speeches -- Reaction." A third portion of the series consists of subject files ostensibly meant as source material for speeches, but encompassing a wide variety of topics. Some topics, such as "State Engineer", seem unlikely subjects for public speeches, so the files may also have served as general information files. The series includes severalfolders of materials relating to the debate over the establishment of state-sponsored educational television. Some folders contain material related to pending legislation, while others hold miscellaneous correspondence. Among this correspondence is a collection of letters about charges that Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Wolfe was a communist. Many such documents in the series seem as if they might have fit better in other series from Governor Lee's office, but were filed with this series for reasons that are unclear.

Research Note

Filing of documents in the series was not always consistent. For example, much of the correspondence in this series could just as easily have been filed in with Governor Lee's other correspondence (Series 211) and news media related materials can also be found in that series and with the Governor's press releases (Series 215). Despite such inconsistencies, documents in the series have been kept as much as possible in the order in which they came from the Governor's office, as represented by the 1979 microfilming. Because filing practice was not always consistent, researchers will want to approach their search broadly, scanning the entire container list, as well as consulting the inventories for other record series from Governor Lee's office.

Arrangement

Chronological and alphanumerical by topic.

This series is arranged in three sections. Governor Lee's speeches are arranged chronologically by year, followed by reaction correspondence arranged in the same way. Last are the resource material files, arranged alphabetically by topic. Arrangement of materials in this series is documented by a microfilm copy made in 1979 and presumably represents the order in which the records were received from the Governor's office.
