Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains an 18" x 24" painting of the Utah Territorial State Prison painted by inmate Frank Treseder (prisoner number 1690) in 1887. The view shows the prison standing in its former location in the Sugar House area of Salt Lake City. Treseder had come to Utah in October of 1862, and was sent to the state penitentiary in September of 1886, after being convicted on the charge of bribery. Treseder is known to have completed multiple paintings of the prison during his sentence.
Research Note
Researchers should note the existence of several other painting sets of the Utah Territorial Prison known to have been made by Frank Treseder. One set showing the prison's interior and exterior is located in the Springville Museum of Art. Another similar set is held by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum in Salt Lake. A single view of the prison looking east is located at the University of Utah's Museum of Fine Arts. And, finally, an undated pencil sketch is known to exist in a private collection in Huntsville.
