Scope and Content

This series is comprised of one record book that documents inquests that occurred in Summit County between 1913 and 1920. Each inquest report was conducted by a justice of the peace (serving in a dual role as coroner ) with each inquest undertaken when a death was suspicious in nature. This book contains inquests from three separate justices of the peace: W.R. Jefford (1913-1917), Peter Clark (1917-1918), and Geo. W. O'Neil (1919-1920). Entries encompass the first 43 pages of the record book, with the rest of the pages blank. Most of the deaths documented here came as a result of mining accidents or suicide.

Research Note

Every name listed in this record book has a corresponding death certificate that has been identified in series 81448, except for the entry on page 15. The writing is difficult to decipher and has been listed on the container list as "Minougham." This entry is unique in the record book because it is the only one that doesn't have any corresponding date information. Based on surrounding entries it would appear that the death took place between February 08 and February 26, but no corresponding death record between those dates has been located.
