Summary of Records
Scope and Content
Brand registers contain a record of marks (tattoos or cuts on the ear) and brands (burn scars on the hide) used by livestock owners to identify their stock. Owners were required to apply for the brand or mark with the county clerk. Each brand was then registered with the State Recorder of Marks and Brands, which later became the Livestock Board.
Marks and brands are recorded separately within each register. Entries record applicant and place of residence, illustration of brand or description of where symbol appeared on the animal, date of registration, and line number.

Custody History
A Recorder of Marks and Brands kept these registers until the Livestock Board was created in 1917. For all but the first seventeen years, territorial and state auditors acted as the recorders of marks and brands. The State Auditor was made ex-officio Recorder of Marks and Brands in 1897.

These records were acquired from the creating agency through established retention schedules.
Processing Information
Archival processing was completed in 1988 by Val Wilson. The first record book was filmed on 35 mm microfilm in 1970; the bulk of the series was microfilmed in 1988. Two missing volumes were located in 1994 and filmed. The long missing Index to Name Owners of Marks and Brands L-Z, 1900-1912, was filmed in January 2005.

Indexes: There are indices to marks, indices to brands, and indices to name owners of marks and brands. The first two are by symbol, the last alphabetical. The indices lead to line number in the main registers. The name index also leads to line and page number in the other two indices, covering from 1849 thru 1921.
